Young Leaders’ Workshop
23-25th April, 2010, Kyoto, Japan
Outcomes Recommendations

In April 2010, as a part of the 20th anniversary celebrations of Urological Association of Asia, the ASU took a new initiative in identifying and training the next generation of leaders in Asia to promote the activities of the UAA. A Young Leaders’ workshop was organized from April 23-25 2010, in Shiran Kaikan, Kyoto University and Grand Prince Hotel, Kyoto, Japan by Dr. Osamu Ogawa, Professor and Chairman of Urology, Kyoto University.

The fundamental purpose of the workshop was to build up a basic intercommunication network among the future leaders of Asian Urology. The main topic of the workshop was ‘Problems of Asian clinical guidelines’. The national associations of each member country of the UAA recommended 1 or 2 of its young members to the ASU for this workshop. Finally, 29 international delegates from 17 Asian countries (Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Korea, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thai, Vietnam) were selected. Ina ddition, two senior advisors from the UAA, Dr KT Foo and Dr Masaru Murai and Chairmen and professors from several Japanese universities contributed as advisors and task-force members. Six young Japanese urologists also joined the workshop. Dr Allen Chiu from Taiwan and Dr Stephen Lim from Singpore also participated in several parts of the workshop.

While the main topic of the workshop was ‘Asian Clinical Guidelines’, the aim was not to make the guidelines themselves but to identify problems in developing such guidelines and to discuss solutions to these problems. Participants were divided into 5 groups, with different topics. An initial briefing and ice-breaking session was followed by a description of the methodology of the workshop. The groups then discussed their topics over three sessions and presented their findings in plenary sessions. In addition, on the evening of 24th April, there was a plenary discussion on the future of UAA.

Another important part of the workshop was the social events, which brought the participants into closer relationship. This included a reception in the evening of 23rd April, the eve of the workshop where each international delegate presented a slideshow describing his country, urology and himself. A half-day city tour of Kyoto city was organized on the 25th April afternoon which was followed by a farewell dinner.

The participation by international delegates was active and outstanding. Each group presented its final outcomes of discussions and gave suggestions to the UAA on how to achieve the aim of developing Asian guidelines.
