14th Urological Association of Asia Congress, 21-24 July 2016, Singapore
The 14th UAA congress was successfully held in Singapore 20-24 July 2016. It was hosted by the Singapore Urological Association and organized in conjunction with the yearly Urology Residents' Course and the 30th Anniversary of the Singapore Urological Association. Minister for Health Mr Gan Kim Yong graced the opening ceremony and stated that Urology had good new advances and innovative equipment in the better treatment of older patients in terms of early recovery and less pain after surgery. I gathered the best team and we worked hard for more than 2 years together with staff from our PCO Globwerks.
The total attendance was 1659 with 1249 in the main congress, 277 in the Nursing program and 133 in the Urology Residents' Course. Participants were from 42 countries. There were 651 free paper presentations, 25 plenary sessions, 19 workshops and masterclasses and 5 sub-specialty society meetings. Our 300 strong faculty members were chosen amongst the best from Asia, America and Europe.
The UAA Council elected 3 UAA honorary members: Dr Foo Keong Tatt from Singapore who delivered a lecture entitled “The future of Asian Urology", Dr Luke Chang from Taiwan delivered "How to be a happy and successful urologist?", and Dr Hemant Tongaonkar from India on "Optimizing outcomes in invasive bladder cancer".
We also had good support from the AUA, EAU and SIU. The AUA lecture was delivered by Dr Matthew Cooperberg on "Health care Quality and registry in Urological Practice", EAU Lecture by Dr Jan Rassweiler on "Laparoscopic Partial Nephrectomy: a standardized technique", and SIU Lecture by Dr Oliver Traxer on "Holmium YAG Laser: what do we know in 2016?"
With special invitation as a friend for many years Dr Urs Studer who spent his life time in developing and perfecting the Ileal-neobladder, an operation named "Studer's Pouch" adapted by urologists world-wide. He delivered a special tribute lecture on "How to make an orthotopic neobladder work?"
I would like to thank everyone for their contribution and endless effort. All participants enjoyed the scientific program as well as the social dinners with singing. It was a memorable Congress.
